Further details

The North East Derbyshire Music Centre is committed to promoting and providing a broad range of music ensemble activities for young people in the area.

All the groups perform in at least two concerts per year, most often in the music centre (Newbold Community School) or in The Winding Wheel.  Some groups, particularly the senior ensembles, also perform in ‘external’ events such as county concerts or charitable fund raising activities.  Concert tours are arranged as and when appropriate.

The ‘Clubs’ and Elementary Strings Orchestra are our entry-level groups which cater for players who can only play a limited range of notes to those who have reached the early ‘grade’ standards.

Many of our players initially joined us after attending one of our Open Mornings which are held twice a year (in October and January) but players of all standards are welcome to ‘have a go’ at any time of the year. Please come along and join us.

Aural and theory classes to support players taking practical examinations.

Subsidised lessons for beginners on certain rare instruments - currently subsidies are available for oboe, bassoon, French horn, trombone, tuba and double bass.

Regular concerts at Newbold Community School, the Winding Wheel and many other venues in and around North East Derbyshire.

Tours abroad. Various groups have, in recent years, visited Austria, Germany, Holland, France, Ireland and USA.     Chesterfield's twin town, Darmstadt, also runs an annual International Youth Orchestra to which some of our players are invited.

City and County Ensembles. The more experienced players in the Centre take part in ensembles organised by Derbyshire City and County Music Partnership. For players of intermediate standard (Grade 4 to Grade 6) there are usually two residential courses each year. The most experienced players (Grade 6 and above) are able to audition for the City and County Youth Wind Band and/or Youth Orchestra.

Full details of all of the above are always available from our administration desk.

We have an extensive library of music for all the groups, which is constantly being updated.

There is a well stocked and popular tuck shop where players meet during breaks.
